Why Are You Fearful?

About a month ago I awoke at 2am fueled by fear over family members who were enduring tremendous hardship. My mind turmoiled over all the things that were not going well and how I wished things could’ve been. In the gap between what was and what I wanted it to be I was completely powerless to help.

Fear grew

As fear grew to anxiousness, I decided to get up and fill my mind with God’s word and to pray over the situation.

I read a story in Luke, chapter 8 about Jesus and his disciples crossing a lake. As they were sailing, a violent storm arose and started to swamp their boat. The disciples, filled with fear, woke Jesus saying, “Master, Master, we’re sinking. Don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

with great authority

With great authority Jesus rebuked the wind and waves and the sea became smooth as glass. Jesus said to them, “Why are you fearful? Have you lost your faith in me?” The disciples were shocked and shaken. With amazement they couldn’t understand who this man was that even the wind and waves obeyed him.

Though I’ve read this story many times, there were a few key things that leaped out to me.

Decide

First, Jesus DECIDED.

He said ‘Let’s cross to the other side’.

This was no ordinary calm lake. The Sea of Galilee was one the disciples knew well as they fished on it for years. Storms would rage up at any time, friends of theirs would’ve lost their lives in swallows of this sea. Though the sea presented a very real danger, Jesus said, “We’re going! Get in the boat!”

Destination

Second, Jesus knew their DESTINATION.

They were crossing to the other side. All too often we do not have a destination or a vision in mind. Whether it be in relationship, business, finance, or in our health too many of us are floating along with no idea where we’re going. If we don’t know where we’re going, how will we know if or when we’re on the right track?

Not without Difficulty

Third, just because they made a DECISION and knew their DESTINATION it did not mean they’d arrive without DIFFICULTY. A violent storm came. Waves tried to capsize their boat. For all they knew they were about to DROWN.

We do this all the time, don’t we?

We DECIDE to get married with the DESTINATION of ‘till death do us part’, only to experience DIFFICULT seasons, so we DEPART.

Progress Derailed

We DECIDE to start a fitness and nutrition plan with the DESTINATION of losing 30lbs. The first few weeks are going well until suddenly you realize ‘Holy crap, this is a lot of work! Results aren’t happening as fast as you want them to!’ Cravings for candy, chocolate and chips are growing immensely. The DIFFICULTY is too much to bear so you cave in. Thinking you’ve ‘failed’ (which by the way you totally haven’t!) you stop showing up and all progress is now DERAILED.

Seek the One…

When the storm came for the disciples they filled with fear. Of course nearly drowning is good reason to be afraid. I’d be afraid too! BUT in their fear, they sought the One who could calm the storm and increase their faith.

Why are you so fearful?

Is your focus on the difficulties you’re facing, or on the One who will help bring you through? Amazingly when we seek God in our troubles, we discover that He is a God of endless love, mercy and grace who wants to help us and strengthen us so that we can bear the difficulties we face.

stand firm

Are you fighting the people and places you find yourself in, or are you standing firm in the One who seeks to fight these battles for you?

Me fighting my own thoughts that night only increased fear. When I DECIDED to turn to God’s word, I found peace. Peace was the DESTINATION. As I surrendered the DIFFICULT thoughts to God, the peace that transcends all understanding came.

faith. hope. love.

Whatever DOUBTS and DIFFICULTIES you face, God wants to bring increased faith, hope and love to your life. If you don’t know what that means or where to begin, check out a Sunday service with us at CTY.LC (City Life Church). We really are a passionate house full of fun and laughter who just want to make it easy for people to say YES to Jesus.

In faith and love!
