Further Not Faster

Goals!

For the first fifteen years of my ‘adulting’ life I set out to accomplish a lot of goals. I had business goals, financial goals, fitness and weight loss goals quarterly, monthly, even daily goals. Goals are helpful as they provide clarity of vision, direction and focus. 

Have you considered what goals you might have for 2019? If so, do you have a plan for how to achieve them?

Often we approach our goals overestimating what we can achieve in a short amount of time. You want to lose 20lbs in January, you want to see a significant shift in your marriage by spring, and you want to be debt free by June. This is a lot to work through in a short amount of time!

For years I had big goals with short timelines. I found myself frustrated things rarely worked out the way I wanted them to. I always felt like I was failing. If I had a big fitness goal it often came with an even bigger injury. Weight loss goals meant I could stick to my perfect plan for 3 or 4 days, but then the weekend came, and I spent another 3 days perfectly sabotaging all progress.

The final straw came 4.5 years ago. I had a goal of running the Death Race. My portion of the race was a 27km run, up and down one mountain, then up and down another.  The total elevation change was well over 6000 feet. The first half of the race felt amazing. Then I hit Slugfest, the most technical portion of the entire race.  It’s full of steep switchbacks. Each single step took every ounce of power and strength I had in me. 

A moment of victory

I finished the run 13 minutes faster than my goal. Many would say this was a significant victory. And for a moment it was! Until days, weeks, and months passed and I realized my big and ‘fast’ achievement left me with chronic pain. I spent the next 3.5 years battling a hip and hamstring injury. 

Brutal! 

Worth the cost?

Faster achievement is possible. Some of you will lose 20lbs this month. Some of you will run a marathon this spring. Many will have their greatest year financially in 2019, even in our slower economy.  

 But…At what cost? Could fast achievement of your goals come with increased risk of setbacks, restarts, hurting self or others, maybe even quitting altogether?

 And if it does come with this cost, is it still worth it to you?

Going Further

What I’ve learned is how much further I want to go vs. getting there faster. My fitness goals are all about building a healthy and strong body into my 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. I could honestly care less about how much I lift, push or pull. I just want to train well so that I keep going longer and stronger for years to come.

My diet goals reflect the energy, clarity, confidence, productivity and patience I want to experience. How and what I eat is a reflection of the woman I desire to be for others, and how I want to feel internally. My diet also reflects how I want my daughters to think about and relate to food in their future.
